Farmingville Food Share

Part of Long Island Food Not Bombs, a Community Solidarity project.

The Farmingville Food Share was created to help struggling families in the Brookhaven area and overcome racial tensions that plagued that community for nearly two decades. After 6 years of operation in Farmingville we're thankful that we've seen those tensions greatly decrease, we've shared weekly groceries with thousands of families and we've helped neighbors get to know each other.

Our goals for Farmingville are to create solidarity amongst the community and, in doing so, become a force of positive change for the residents of Farmingville.

We do this by sharing free food, clothing, books, toys and other necessities with our fellow community members.

The residents of Farmingville have been subjected to acts of violence and discrimination by hate groups whom take issue with immigrants coming to the community. Systemic racism in the local political structure was the cause of over 100 racially motivated housing evictions in 2005. These evictions were steered by local town officials and were solely aimed at the immigrant population.

Our work to overcome these tensions with our food distribution program, "Long Island Food Not Bombs" was documented by National Public Radio's Ari Shaprio in the fall of 2009. You can listen to that story here.

We hope that in the years to come, the Farmingville Food Share further helps to unite the community and eventually overcomes the racial and economic oppressions that have hurt the community so badly.
